Taynton & Tibberton Women's Institute...

Tibberton W.I. was formed in July 1925 and became Tibberton & Taynton W.I. probably in the 1930’s. The Gloucester Federation of Women's Institutes was, however, founded in 1919.

To date we have a membership of 49 ladies and meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month in Taynton & Tibberton Village Hall. Entertainment, usually in the form of a guest speaker, follows a short meeting. However, joining the W.I. opens up many horizons for ladies who wish to further other interests. Denman College in Oxfordshire holds courses on numerous subjects, the Gloucestershire Federation organize many trips and functions. Some ladies just attend the meetings when they are available to attend, but others like to get more involved with issues of the day. The W.I. gives a wonderful opportunity to forge new and lasting friendships as well as learn new subjects.

May Report

At our monthly meeting Sue Marshfield entertained us with her highly amusing tales of “The Lighter Side of Life”. Sue has visited us on several occasions and never fails to get us rolling about with laughter.

On the following Friday evening Tibberton & Taynton ladies were hosting the Annual May Hill Group Rally. Members from neighbouring institutes joined us for this splendid shared evening. Our County Vice Chairman, Glenda Ford, told us about forthcoming events and in particular the celebration of 90 years of the Gloucestershire Federation which will take place in Tewkesbury Abbey next year.

The Guest Speaker, for the evening, was George Yiend accompanied by his wife Frances. Laurie Lee’s ‘Cider with Rosie’ was the subject and after George had given us the background of Laurie Lee’s life in the village of Slad near Stroud, he recounted the verse from Cider with Rosie taking us through Laurie Lee’s childhood. George’s rendition was brilliant, his accent was perfect and the stories so amusing, Frances played her keyboard and sang during the intervals of the entertainment.

The results of a competition to display a “Healthy Lifestyle Picnic” were then announced. The judge was very impressed by the standard set and the final marks were very close. The Rose Bowl was presented to Highnam WI, with Tibberton & Taynton coming second and Rudford, Highleadon & Churcham tying with May Hill for third place. All this excitement over, it was time to tuck into a delicious supper with a choice of cider or apple juice highlighting the Cider with Rosie theme.

"T&T Healthy Picnic Competition Entry"

The following morning, to prove that T & T ladies have lots of stamina, a group of us were out walking along the canal and river at Slimbridge. We strolled past the monument in memory of the decaying Severn barges scattered along the banks of the estuary, and viewed the remains of the original Severn Railway bridge. The marina was a lively scene with boat owners tending their colourful craft. A splendid pub lunch at the Pier View Hotel rounded off this welcome breath of fresh air.
